Why the site is not called Waverley
Because nobody says it. Waverley Borough Council takes its name from an abbey ruin, and residents here give their town instead: Farnham, Godalming, Haslemere or Cranleigh. The council is real enough, though, and it is the body behind planning permissions, bin rounds, car parks and council tax bands across all four towns, so its paperwork is where most of our reporting starts.
Where we cover
Farnham with Wrecclesham, Badshot Lea, Tilford and Frensham; Godalming with Farncombe, Milford, Elstead and Witley; Haslemere with Hindhead and Chiddingfold; and Cranleigh with Bramley and the villages out towards the Sussex border. The Wey runs through a good deal of it, and flooding is a recurring local subject we report from official warnings rather than hearsay.
How we work
Every fact comes from a named source and carries a link to it: Waverley Borough Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the upper Wey and Cranleigh Waters, and company filings in The Gazette. Roads, schools and social care are Surrey County Council’s responsibility, not the borough’s, and we say so rather than sending you to the wrong place.
Reorganisation in 2027
Waverley Borough Council is due to be abolished in 2027 and replaced by a new West Surrey unitary authority. Surrey is ahead of most of the country on this, so the change lands here before it lands elsewhere in the South East. We will report each step from the published papers and keep our reference pages pointing at whichever authority is actually responsible when you read them.
