Farnham Roadworks: Castle Street Shut Nightly to Saturday

The Farnham roadworks programme is on night two of five with Castle Street fully closed. The street shuts in both directions from 8pm to 6am tonight and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, then it ends at 6am on Saturday. Victoria Road joins it for two nights from Wednesday, which is the one that catches drivers using Central car park. Sunday brings the Food Festival, free parking and no trains at all through Farnham. This page has what is shut tonight, the diversions the council actually recommends, and what changes next Monday.

What is closed right now

Castle Street is closed to northbound traffic, all day, every day. The closure started on Sunday 16 August 2026 and Surrey County Council expects it to last approximately six weeks, which points to a reopening around Sunday 27 September. The council has not published a firm end date, and its page warns that heavy rain or extreme heat may change the duration.

Crews need the western side of the street, between The Borough and Long Garden Walk, to install new kerbing and then resurface. Surrey chose the northbound lane because it carries less traffic than the southbound one.

What that means at the wheel:

• You can still drive down Castle Street from Upper Hale and turn either way at The Borough.
• You cannot turn out of The Borough into Castle Street to head north towards Upper Hale.
• The permanent traffic lights are on, so there are no temporary lights in this phase.
• The two disabled bays at the bottom of Castle Street are suspended. Use the town centre car parks instead.
• Pedestrian access to businesses is kept during opening hours. Cyclists must walk their bikes past the closed section.

Surrey says that once the resurfacing is finished and the northbound closure is lifted, temporary traffic lights will go into Castle Street to allow two-way traffic again. So the barriers coming down is not the same as the street going back to normal.

Castle Street overnight: three nights left after tonight

Castle Street is closed in both directions for five nights from Monday 21 September, 8pm to 6am, for full resurfacing and painting white lines. The closed length runs from the junction with The Borough as far as Park Row. Five nights from Monday means the last one should end at 6am on Saturday 26 September, though Surrey has not spelled that final date out and warns that bad weather may move it.

• Parking: there is no parking south of Park Row on either side of the road. Surrey says cars found parked there after works start will be moved.
• Waverley Borough Council has confirmed the existing temporary permits letting Castle Street residents use Upper Hart car park stay valid during the resurfacing.
• Pavements stay open. Cyclists should walk their bikes past the closure.
• Business access is maintained during opening hours. Surrey asks businesses expecting a delivery during the closure to contact the project team.
• Surrey has warned that this is noisy work, “particularly during the resurfacing phase”.

The diversions

Northbound, towards Upper Hale (in force now, day and night). There is no left turn from The Borough into Castle Street. The diversion runs via South Street, the A31 to the Shepherd and Flock roundabout, the A325, Hale Road, Upper Hale Road, Folly Hill and Castle Hill, then back into Castle Street.

Southbound, towards the town centre (overnight closures only). Drivers take Castle Hill, Folly Hill, Upper Hale Road and Hale Road to the Six Bells roundabout, then the Shepherd and Flock roundabout and the A31 westbound. At Hickley’s Corner, turn left into Station Hill, right at the station into Approach Road, then right onto Firgrove Hill, then Long Bridge and Downing Street.

Victoria Road: two nights from Wednesday, and it is not the resurfacing

This one is new on the council’s page since our last update, and it is not what the permit register implied.

Victoria Road is closed for two nights from 23 September, 8pm to 6am. Surrey says the closure is for trial holes, to core the road surface and assess the condition and structure of the foundation underneath. The results decide what material the road is eventually resurfaced with, so the road is cracking less often afterwards.

If you use Central car park, this is the one to know about. Surrey’s notice tells residents and anyone trying to get into or out of Central car park to follow instructions from the site team. There is no published alternative access.

The actual resurfacing of Victoria Road is still on Surrey’s outstanding-works list, with no date attached, alongside the raised tables, the South Street white lining and the street furniture.

Correction, 22 September 2026. Our 19 September update said Victoria Road was being resurfaced from 22 to 25 September, reading that off permit MA900FTC in Surrey’s register. The council has since published the detail: the permit covers trial holes on two nights from 23 September, and the resurfacing has not been scheduled.

East Street closes at night for a month, and it is not the town centre works

From Monday 21 September until 12 October, East Street is closed eastbound between 8pm and 4am on weeknights only, for utility works. Surrey County Council is explicit that this is separate from the Farnham town centre improvement works.

Then the direction flips. From 13 October until 22 October East Street closes westbound, on the same 8pm to 4am weeknight pattern.

Buses are diverted through both halves:

• Eastbound phase, services 5 and 18 towards Aldershot divert from The Borough via South Street, the A31 Farnham bypass and the Shepherd and Flock roundabout, rejoining at Six Bells roundabout. They cannot serve Woolmead Road, East Street, Adams Park Road or Farnham Hospital North.
• Eastbound phase, service 65 towards Guildford diverts from The Borough via South Street and the A31 to the Shepherd and Flock roundabout. It cannot serve Woolmead Road, East Street, Kimbers Lane, Farnham Hospital South or Shepherd and Flock Roundabout.
• Westbound phase, services 5 and 18 run as far as Farnham Leisure Centre on Dogflud Way, then return along East Street and divert via Guildford Road, the Shepherd and Flock roundabout and the A31 to Farnham station. No stops on East Street or South Street.
• Westbound phase, service 65 towards Alton runs to the Shepherd and Flock roundabout, then the A31 to Coxbridge roundabout, then West Street to pick up the town centre loop of The Borough, South Street, Union Road and Downing Street.

When the road is open, all services run as normal.

The A3 is shut overnight at Milford every night this week

This is the one that will catch people driving home from Guildford or Portsmouth late, and it is not on any Surrey page.

National Highways’ seven-day closure report, published for the week of 21 to 27 September, has the A3 northbound closed between Hazel Grove and Milford from 9pm to 6am on every night from Monday 21 to Friday 25 September. The A3 northbound at Longmoor, between the exit and entry slip roads, is closed on the same nights and the same hours. Both sit inside one scheme, described as carriageway closures for resurfacing on the A3 in both directions between the Hogs Back and Longmoor.

Two more nights of it are already gone. What is left in the report:

• A3 southbound, Liphook Services closed from 10pm on Tuesday 22 September to 6am on Wednesday, for maintenance.
• A3 southbound, Wisley exit slip road closed from 10pm on Wednesday 23 September to 5.30am on Thursday, for urgent sign repairs, diverted over local roads.
• A3 southbound, both Weston slip roads closed from 9pm on Friday 25 September to 6am on Saturday.

The A3 southbound closure between Stoke and the Hogs Back, for survey work, ran on the nights of Monday and Tuesday only and is not in the report after that.

Sunday 27 September: three things at once

Sunday is the day worth reading twice. Three separate things land on it.

1. No trains through Farnham at all. The lines in the Aldershot area are closed all day for maintenance, so London Waterloo to Alton services do not run.
2. The Food Festival closes The Borough (East) and East Street from 5am to 8pm. Drivers can still turn right at the bottom of Castle Street onto The Borough (West). The festival itself runs 10am to 4pm, entry free, and the Farmers’ Market runs in Central car park from 10am to 1pm.
3. Castle Street’s six weeks are up, on the council’s approximate timing, so the northbound closure may lift around this date.

Buses while Castle Street is shut

Stagecoach services 4 and 404 are diverted on journeys heading out of Farnham. They leave Union Road as normal, then run via The Borough, Woolmead Road, East Street, Hale Road and Upper Hale Road, then use Trinity Hill and Drovers Way to serve the Drovers Way, Old Park Close and Lawday Place Lane stops before rejoining the normal route.

• Service 4 leaves Union Road and The Borough five minutes earlier than normal to absorb the diversion. Surrey has published a temporary timetable for it.
• Stops on Castle Street, Castle Hill and Folly Hill are suspended. Use the Upper Hale Road stops instead.
• Service 404, which serves the Farnborough colleges in term time, also skips those stops in the morning.
• The temporary southbound stop in Castle Street sits further up the hill, because the old one is inside the works area.
• Buses coming into Farnham town centre are not affected.

Two cautions about the bus information itself. Surrey’s bus page has carried the same 16 August update for the Farnham town centre works ever since, so it says nothing about the five overnight closures now running. And the council has been promising a short temporary closure of the bus stop in The Borough “in mid-September” since August without ever naming a date. Mid-September has now been and gone with the stop still open, so treat it as open until you see a notice on it.

Every live job in Farnham, from the county’s permit register

Surrey’s “roadworks in your area” register listed 140 permits for Waverley today, of which 57 have an end date of today or later and 20 have not started yet. Everything below is a Farnham ward. Dates are the permit’s booked start and end, which can move.

Three things fall out of that table that no single closure notice tells you.

Next Monday is the day the register turns over. Four Farnham permits all start on 28 September: Firgrove Hill for a day, Greenfield Road for Thames Water, Bear Lane for SSE, and traffic light refurbishment on the Farnham By-pass, booked to run to 19 October. That last one is three weeks of work on the A31 through the town, the road the diversions for every town centre closure depend on. Surrey has published no closure notice for it, and the permit alone does not say whether lanes come out.

SGN is working through Farnham street by street, and will be until Christmas. Seven of the permits above are gas jobs. Three of them, Hillary Road, Brambleton Avenue and St Johns Road, are all in Firgrove, and the St Johns Road permit runs to 18 December. Heath End has two more, plus a footpath booked through to April 2027. None of this is part of the town centre scheme.

Some things have finished. South Street’s traffic light refurbishment was a one-day job on 21 September and has dropped off the register. Water Lane in Weybourne has gone too, and Monkton Lane ends today.

The register is six days ahead of itself

Surrey’s register is worth a look again, and it is worth saying why. Through late August and early September it froze: the newest booked start date in it sat at 25 August for a fortnight while the heading still promised works “from today until the end of next week”.

The forward view came back on 10 September and it has held. The newest booked start date in the Waverley table today is 28 September, six days ahead, and 20 of its permits have not begun yet.

One caution survives. Utility companies can notify Surrey up to two hours after emergency works start, and cannot be refused, so a quiet list is still not a promise of a quiet week.

Elsewhere in the district

Critchmere Lane, Haslemere stays closed until 12 October for footway reconstruction. It shut on Tuesday 1 September. Stagecoach service 71 diverts via Critchmere Hill and Hindhead Road in both directions and cannot serve any Critchmere Lane stops.

Godalming’s Holloway ward has three Thames Water jobs at once. Town End Street and Park Road both run from 23 to 28 September, with Lammas Road in Farncombe and Catteshall to 29 September and Chalk Road in Binscombe from 27 to 30 September. None is a full closure on the register.

Portsmouth Road, Godalming is under Surrey highways improvement works from 23 to 28 September.

Meadrow, Godalming still runs to 7 November, a month later than the date the register carried in early September.

Haslemere has two SGN gas jobs running to 2 October, on Wey Hill and Lower Street, plus SSE electricity work on The Paddock to 10 October and a Thames Water job on Museum Hill to 23 September.

Horsham Road, Cranleigh West is a Surrey highways job booked from 25 September to 23 October. Guildford Road, Cranleigh West stays under Thames Water until 26 October.

Station Lane, Milford is closed for gas main work by the Gas Transportation Company from 23 September to 3 October.

The A31

No closures at Farnham. National Highways’ seven-day closure report for 21 to 27 September lists A31 closures only in Dorset and Hampshire: Ashley Heath, Verwood, Ringwood, Poulner Hill and Picket Post. Nothing on the Surrey stretch. The Surrey work on the Farnham By-pass starts on 28 September and is Surrey County Council’s, not National Highways’.

Trains: a thinned Saturday, a lost Sunday, then four October weekends

Farnham sits on the Alton branch, which leaves the main line between Brookwood and Aldershot.

• Saturday 26 September: fewer trains to Guildford, because of rugby at Twickenham. South Western Railway is stripping out services to run extra trains to the 3pm match. Between 0934 and 1934 the xx34 Farnham to Guildford services do not run, and between 1023 and 2023 the xx23 Guildford to Farnham services do not run. Between 1104 and 2004 the xx04 Farnham to Guildford services start from Aldershot instead, and between 1053 and 1953 the xx53 Guildford to Farnham services stop short at Aldershot. Aldershot to Ascot loses the xx00 between 1100 and 2000, and Ascot to Aldershot the xx53 between 1053 and 1953.
• Sunday 27 September: no trains through Farnham all day. The lines in the Aldershot area are closed for maintenance. London Waterloo to Alton services do not run, and SWR advises passengers from Waterloo to use the Basingstoke stopping services as far as Farnborough. Buses run between Farnborough and Alton via Aldershot, calling in Bentley village. Ascot to Guildford via Aldershot services do not run, with buses on that route too.
• Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October: the Guildford area is closed all weekend. On the Saturday, Guildford to Farnham via Aldershot services do not run and buses replace them. On the Sunday, Guildford to Ascot services start from Aldershot with buses between Guildford and Aldershot. Buses run Woking to Haslemere via Guildford on both days, which is the Portsmouth line through Godalming, Milford and Witley.
• Sunday 18 October: the Guildford area is closed all day again. Buses run Woking to Haslemere via Guildford, and Guildford to Ascot services start from Aldershot.
• Sunday 25 October: buses replace trains between Guildford and Petersfield, via Haslemere. Waterloo to Portsmouth services terminate at Guildford.
• Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November: the Haslemere area is closed all weekend. On the Saturday, Waterloo to Portsmouth services terminate at Haslemere with buses on to Havant. On the Sunday they terminate at Guildford, with buses Guildford to Havant via Haslemere.

South Western Railway usually runs an amended timetable around these closures, with some services leaving earlier than normally advertised, so check a journey planner rather than the usual departure time.

The rest of this week, in one picture

Where the whole scheme is going

Roadworks began in Farnham town centre in February 2025. Surrey County Council’s page now carries two different finishing lines, and it is worth knowing both. The opening section still says the works are “expected to be completed as planned by the end of the 2026”. Further down, under outstanding works, it says the main town centre works are “still expected to be completed in November”.

November is the more specific of the two, and it is the one attached to a list. Still to come after Castle Street:

• raised table crossing points in Castle Street and The Borough
• white line painting in South Street
• street furniture, including benches, bins and bus shelters
• resurfacing of Victoria Road, now booked for 22 to 25 September
• a section of pavement on the north side of West Street

That last one has no date at all. Surrey says its timing “is being considered around the need to avoid the key pre-Christmas trading period”, which is the council saying out loud that it may slip into 2027.

What the money buys, in the council’s own list: wider pavements, new planting, paving and seating, dedicated loading bays, pedestrian-controlled crossings and raised tables, two-way traffic at the bottom of Downing Street and on The Borough west of Castle Street, two new bus shelters with real-time information and level boarding, advanced stop lines and more cycle parking, and sustainable drainage.

Already delivered: the right turn out of Castle Street and the Waggon Yard car park, so drivers no longer have to loop the gyratory; the Longbridge junction upgrade; Downing Street pavements and resurfacing; and the Borelli Walk and Riverside Walk shared route from the Riverside car parks to South Street via Brightwells.

The A31, which is the real problem

The town centre works do not touch Farnham’s structural issue. Surrey County Council’s own description is blunt: the A31 “cuts Farnham into two parts”, separating the south of the town from the station, the centre and the north.

The Farnham A31 Corridor project would upgrade the Coxbridge Roundabout and the Shepherd and Flock Roundabout with layout changes, signals on some approaches, lane widening and better pedestrian and cycle facilities. It is not funded. A Strategic Outline Business Case went to the Department for Transport in November 2021 and was approved in late 2023. An Outline Business Case, with a full public consultation, comes next, and a Final Business Case after that decides whether the DfT pays. Nothing is being built on the A31 in 2026.

The wider Farnham Infrastructure Programme behind all of this was formed in 2019 by Surrey County Council, Waverley Borough Council, Farnham Town Council and the then MP, to tackle the town’s congestion and air quality. Its earlier deliveries were the HGV restrictions on Castle Hill, Castle Street, Folly Hill and Upper Hale Road in October 2021, and the 20mph zones in the town centre and Weydon Lane in summer 2023, extended to Upper Hale Road in autumn 2024.

Parking: the number most people get wrong

Farnham’s car parks are not priced alike. All-day parking ranges from £6.80 to £24.40 depending on which one you pick, and the two most expensive are the two closest to the middle of town. Every council car park in Farnham is free on Sundays and Christmas Day, which includes Food Festival day. Blue Badge holders park free everywhere.

Riverside 1, Central and Upper Hart were re-checked against their own Waverley pages on 19 September 2026 and are unchanged. The rest of the table was checked on 5 September 2026.

Where the table shows a dash under Blue Badge bays, the council’s page for that car park confirms free Blue Badge parking but does not publish a number of marked bays. Riverside 1, 2 and 3 together hold 351 spaces.

The £24.40 is not a mistake and it is not really a price. Central and Lower Hart charge £5.60 for four hours, £8.90 for six and £14.70 for eight, then £24.40 for the day. They are priced to turn over shoppers, not to host commuters. If you are staying all day, the Riverside car parks cost £17.60 less.

Central, Lower Hart and South Street also charge in the evening, 5.30pm to 10pm: £1.40 for the whole evening Monday to Thursday, and £1.40 an hour or £2.40 all evening on Friday and Saturday. That matters more than usual for the next five nights, because the Castle Street resurfacing starts at 8pm and there will be no parking on Castle Street south of Park Row.

Three other details worth knowing:

• Brightwells Yard has 18 EV charging bays and a 1.9 metre height barrier, and no permits are available there. Its machines are on levels 2, 4, 6 and 8.
• Riverside 3 has three EV chargers, run by GeniePoint. No other Farnham car park has any.
• Upper Hart and St James both have a 2.1 metre height barrier. Memorial Hall and Upper Hart take coins and RingGo only, not cards.

The routes that matter between phases

Whatever is closed this month, four things stay true about driving in Farnham.

1. The gyratory is the bottleneck, not the roadworks. The council’s standing advice is to pick a car park you can reach without going round it, and walk the last few minutes.
2. The A31 splits the town. Anything that crosses it, including the station, is a different journey from anything that does not.
3. The level crossing at the station can hold you at the barriers, which is why the A31 project lists reducing its impact as an aim.
4. Castle Street, Castle Hill, Folly Hill and Upper Hale Road are the loop the diversions use, in one direction or the other depending on the phase. They also carry an HGV restriction, so lorries cannot follow you round.

Where to check before you set off

• Farnham town centre improvement works, which Surrey updates as phases change and which carries the current bus arrangements.
• Surrey’s roadworks in your area register, whose forward view is currently six days.
• National Highways’ seven-day closure report, the only place the overnight A3 and A31 closures are published.
• Farnham Town Council’s traffic and roadworks page, and the town’s live traffic cameras.
• Surrey Highways runs a weekly roadworks bulletin by email, which is the single easiest way to stay ahead of this.

What it means for you

If you drive through Farnham after 8pm this week, assume Castle Street is shut both ways and East Street is shut eastbound, and that both stay that way until the small hours. If you park in Central car park on Wednesday or Thursday night, expect to be directed by the site team on Victoria Road. If you live on Castle Street south of Park Row, keep the car off the road before 8pm, because Surrey has said cars left there will be moved, and your Upper Hart permit still works. If you are driving back from Guildford or Portsmouth late, the A3 northbound is shut between Hazel Grove and Milford every night to Friday. If you are going to the Food Festival on Sunday, do not plan on the train, and note that Saturday’s Guildford trains are thinned out for the rugby. Parking is free in every Waverley car park on the Sunday.

Where is the cheapest all-day parking in Farnham?

The Riverside car parks, St James and Memorial Hall, at £6.80 for the day. The most expensive are Central and Lower Hart at £24.40. All Waverley car parks in Farnham are free on Sundays.
