Luminosa sings Orff's Carmina Burana at St Thomas-on-the-Bourne on 21 November at 7pm, with Holme pupils. Adults £18.50, under-12s £10, on the door too.

Luminosa, a 90-strong choir from North East Hampshire, will perform Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at St Thomas-on-the-Bourne, Farnham, on Saturday 21 November at 7pm, with children from local primary schools including The Holme singing alongside the adults.

Tickets are £18.50 for adults and £10 for children under 12, on sale now and on the door, though the choir recommends booking early.

Who is performing

The choir will be joined by soloists from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, a percussion ensemble led by George English, and two pianists, Michael Higgins and Adam Blosse, the choir says. The schoolchildren are the part of the night with a Farnham stake: Luminosa says the concert gives “young local performers the opportunity to take part in one of the most celebrated works in the choral repertoire”.

Carmina Burana is set to medieval poetry and moves through fate, spring, love and celebration. Its opening chorus, O Fortuna, is the bit most people know, the release points out, having turned up in films including Excalibur and The Omen and in advertising and sport on television.

The rest of the programme is a selection of shorter choral works; the choir’s concert listing names them as selected folk songs.

In the choir’s words

Rebekah Herz-Bauman, Luminosa’s artistic director, a singer and choral composer, said:

“Carmina Burana is one of the most exhilarating works in the choral repertoire. Many people recognise O Fortuna within the first few seconds, even if they are unfamiliar with the title of the work itself. It’s an incredibly accessible and infectious piece that has introduced generations of listeners to classical music, and it’s a fantastic work to experience live.”

The choir describes itself as bringing together “singers who are passionate about creating high-quality choral performances in a welcoming and inclusive environment”, with a repertoire running from major choral works and sacred music to contemporary pieces and new arrangements.

Where the money goes

A portion of the proceeds will go to Dogs for Autism, the choir’s chosen charity, which provides specially trained assistance dogs. The release does not say how large a share.
